Short Overview
The program provides the essential theoretical and practical foundation for professionals in the field of sustainable development, enabling them to integrate the relevant principles of sustainable development into their reporting and daily practice during the decision-making process in areas related to sustainable , inclusion and inequality, and systemic as well as critical, methodological thinking. Thematic modules will address pillars of sustainable development such as energy decarbonization and sustainable industry, ecosystem life on land and in water, the fight against poverty and hunger, sustainable cities and communities, sustainable digital transformation, and systemic stakeholder management and communication methodologies. These pillars are guided by two principles: a. the “leaving no one behind” strategy, and b. the circular economy. This seminar will provide training on creating development plans for each of the six pillars of the sustainable transition, in line with both above mentioned two principles which guiding these development plans. These plans form the basis for documenting reporting but also for securing funding (from EU, national, private, and other sources) for the transition to sustainability. It should be noted that the European Green Deal commits more than 1 trillion euros to its implementation.
Learning Goals
Upon Successful completion, the program offers:
- An understanding of the sustainable development model and its practical significance for the environment, the economy, business, and society.
- Specific techno-economic knowledge for each pillar of sustainable development.
- An understanding of the various dimensions of sustainable development (economic, legal, technological, political, and social).
- Understanding the United Nations 2030 Agenda, the European Green Deal, the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and the new framework they establish for the economy and production.
- Familiarization with the modern tools required for the design of sustainable development strategies and actions within the context of private and public entities as well as civil society organizations. Specifically, the development of implementation plans for sustainable pillars guided by the values of circularity and “Leaving no one behind”.
- Understanding and familiarization with new sustainable management and decision-making models that ensure, among other things, access to funds for the implementation of the European Green Deal and, more generally, technical tools for achieving the transition to sustainability in the sectors of shipping, sustainable and green agriculture, the circular economy, public and private financial institutions, municipalities and regions, the circular economy, green shipping, blue growth, banks, and corporate social responsibility, and the solidarity economy, among others.

Learning Method Description
Professional program in ESG Reporting Methodology and Metrics to be delivered in a blended mode (synchronous and/or face to face) from the Athens University of Economics and Business. Target audience comprises C-Suite level executives, relevant business developers and Sustainability Dpts of National and International Companies operating in Europe.
It is well documented that Governments, regulators, and standards setters around the world have reacted to the increased urgency for business and finance to tackle climate change, biodiversity collapse and general unsustainable growth practices, by introducing numerous regulations and standards that the business community must comply with. Mandatory reporting creates structure and detail around what companies must report however, the current flux in the market is leaving many practitioners with a set of new challenges in creating coherent and consistent reporting to fit the needs of their stakeholders.
This Programme comprises hands-on market knowledge along with the scientific eminence of the academic staff of the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB), leaded by the world renowned Professor Phoebe Koundouri, having a solid academic acumen in the field.
The dynamic cooperation of the AUEB Research Laboratory on Socio-Economic and Environmental Sustainability (ReSEES) and the Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Aephoria (AE4RIA) provides holistic understanding and applied background in line with the relevant decision-making tools, to enable decision-makers in their daily business conduct to respond to the swathe of sustainability-related regulations and standards that the business and financial community must comply with.
