Gerasimos Georgopoulos is a graduate of the University of Piraeus, Department of Economics and holds a Master's Degree in Business Administration with specialization in Banking & Finance from the Open University of Cyprus.
He has worked in major positions in the private sector (HSBC Bank Plc., BP Hellas S.A., Mobil Oil Hellas S.A., Alpha Finance) and since 2004 he has been working in the Corporate Directorate of the Ministry of Development & Investment. In 2014 he was appointed Head of the Department of Institutional Regulations of Corporations (Corporate Law). The responsibilities of the Department include legislation on all areas of corporate law, annual accounts (annual financial statements and related reports), business transformation, corporate governance & publication of such information in the Registry (GEMI).
He participates in a number of committees of European and International Organizations such as the Accounting Regulatory Committee (ARC), the Special Committee on the Interconnection of Commercial Registers and Company Registers of the EU (BRIS), the Committee of Experts on Corporate Law of the EU (CLEG), the United Nations Committee on International Trade (UN working group I: Micro, Small & Medium sized Enterprises). He also participates in the committee of the European Council on Corporate Law (e.g. Directives 2013/34, 2014/95, 2007/36, 2017/1132, 2019/1151, 2019/2121, 2021/2101, 2022/2464, etc. ) as well as Chairman or member of numerous legislative committees in our country {including 4441/16 (YMS), 4541/18 (EPE & IKE), 4548/18 (AE), 4635/19 (GEMI), 4601/19 (transformations), 4706/20 (corporate governance) and many others).
He is also a member of the Quality Control Council of ELTE. He has been repeatedly honored by the World Bank for his contribution in the domain of "starting a business" and "protecting minority investors" which recognized as the best global practice the establishment of an IPE through the One Stop Service (YMS) rated 13th globally. Through technical assistance from the EU or the World Bank, he has deployed YMS in a number of countries such as Georgia (5th globally), Armenia (10th globally) and has provided technical assistance to Balkan countries (Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and North Macedonia). It has also worked with the OECD on the part of reducing administrative burdens in Greece for businesses. Finally, he works with the European Commission in the domain of sustainable financing and "green bonds" and offers technical assistance to EU partner countries (e.g. Indonesia, Taiwan, Tanzania, etc.).
He has participated in numerous conferences of international organizations (UN, OECD, World Bank, FATF) focusing on corporate law, digital corporate law, early warning, credit rating, sustainability and commercial disclosure. Finally, it has implemented training and certification programs for the employees of the GEMI and One-Stop Services at EKDDA and carries out educational work in cooperation with SOEL (for chartered accountants), the Economic Chamber of Greece (for tax advisors - accountants), the Hellenic Capital Market Commission, the Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Commercial, Professional & Craft) and other institutions.
