Legal Expert, Hellenic Data Protection Authority

Dr. Maria Alikakou has been practicing law since 2000 and has worked as a Legal Expert at the Hellenic Data Protection Authority since 2006. She obtained her Law degree from the Faculty of Law of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. As a recipient of a scholarship from the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY), she completed her postgraduate studies in European and International Law and International Human Rights Law at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2002) and the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom (2003), respectively. She subsequently obtained her PhD in Human Rights from the Department of International and European Studies at the University of Macedonia (2014). She also teaches at the National School of Public Administration and at the Training Institute of the National Centre for Public Administration. She holds relevant language certifications and speaks English, French, German, and Italian. Dr. Alikakou has participated in numerous conferences and seminars on data protection both in Greece and abroad. Furthermore, she has served as an expert in key projects carried out by the Hellenic DPA in cooperation with other entities under European programmes, such as byDesign (2020–2022), byDefault (2022–2024), and is currently participating as an expert in two new initiatives titled byRisk and XTRUST-6G. She also represents the Hellenic DPA and serves as a national expert in subgroups of the European Data Protection Board, in special-purpose working groups, and other task forces established under the auspices of the European Commission and other European fora. Since 2006, she has also been a member of the European Schengen Evaluation Body in the field of personal data protection. As of early this year, she has also been appointed as an expert in the Ethics and Personal Data Committee established within the framework and for the purposes of the Special Action of the Institute of Child Health regarding the prevention of child sexual abuse at E.L
