Short Overview
The objective of the course is to help managers, self-employed professionals and students interested in Strategy, to develop their capacity for strategic thinking not only in periods of growth but also in periods of crisis and recession. During the course we will focus on:
- Helping participants understand what strategy is. The strategy diamond, an easy-to-understand strategy technique is used.
- How to analyze the external environment of the company (Structural Analysis of Industries, 5 Forces, PEST analysis, Strategic Groups, Trends, Scenario Planning etc)
- How to exploit and build resources and capabilities needed to achieve, maintain and improve the firm’s market positioning (strategy as the creation of dynamic capabilities, resource based view of the firm, value chain).
- How to direct the company into the future (mission/vision/strategic intent)
- how to craft and implement strategy, given several alternative strategic options (choices include: in which areas should we diversify, in which products/services should we expand, how we are going to implement this expansion, are we going to acquire, merge, form an alliance with another business).
- How to build and sustain competitive advantage and how to develop innovative strategies to change the rules of the game in our industry (competitive strategies, strategic innovation etc.).
- How to live and work with strategy by creating a strategy responsive organization. This can only be achieved by tuning systems, structures, and people to strategy, and by effectively managing the process of strategizing.
- Finally, to discuss how it would be possible to develop a healthy strategic dialogue inside the organization.
Learning Goals
After completing the course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the external environment in which companies operate and anticipate the influence of the various elements of the external environment to the company and its strategy.
- Develop understanding on how to build and sustain competitive advantage.
- Understand how to craft and implement strategy, given several alternative strategic options.
- Realize what type of structure, systems, people, a company needs to successfully implement a chosen strategy.
- Spot and discuss the most common strategy mistakes taking place, and to offer participants ideas as to how to avoid them.
Program Value
The program aims to help managers and/or students better understand the circumstances where extensive strategic changes are necessary and to help them master, through actual business cases, the challenges of crafting and implementing strategy. Case studies are chosen not only to illustrate important strategic concepts, but also to help participants apply these concepts and analytical tools.
Teaching Material
All participants following the course will take the best seller strategy book by Professor Vassilis Papadakis, entitled ‘Strategic Thinking and Practice in Business’, Psichogios Publishing, 2018.
Evaluation Method And Final Grade Computation
The evaluation will be done with an electronic written exam at the end of each module (70% of the final mark) and preparation of a final paper (30%). Successful completion of the program and award of a training certificate requires a final grade of at least 50%.
Learning Method Description
The program uses the eLearning educational method: learning takes place purely asynchronously (that is, on days and hours that serve the trainee, without mandatory attendance at a specific time or day), exclusively remotely (using a special educational platform via the internet from the trainee's area) and using digital educational tools such as video lectures, interactive self-assessment exercises, and other elearning tools that ensure effective and flexible individual self-learning. The program's training material becomes available at specific time periods, based on the training path followed, and then remains available on the training platform without restrictions throughout the duration of the program.
